Sustainable Gift Wrapping: Thoughtful Choices for a Greener Holiday

Gift wrapping is one of the joys of the holiday season, but traditional wrapping paper often comes with a hidden environmental cost. Glossy, glittery, or foil-lined paper may look festive, but much of it is non-recyclable, contributing to millions of tons of holiday waste each year. The good news? Eco-friendly gift wrapping ideas can be just as beautiful, creative, and personal—all while being kinder to the planet.

Why Choose Sustainable Gift Wrapping?

Did you know most wrapping paper isn’t recyclable? Switching to sustainable gift-wrapping ideas reduces waste and promotes a greener holiday. By choosing eco-friendly materials, you’re giving twice: to your loved ones and to the environment.

Benefits of sustainable gift wrapping include:

  • Reducing landfill waste from non-recyclable paper.
  • Supporting a zero-waste lifestyle and circular economy.
  • Inspiring others to adopt eco-friendly holiday practices.

Creative and Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping Ideas

1. Repurpose What You Already Have:

  • Recycled gift wrap like old newspapers and colorful magazine pages
  • Fabric scraps or scarves (furoshiki wrapping) for reusable and unique designs.

2. Use Recyclable or Compostable Wrapping Materials

  • Brown kraft paper: Customize with hand-drawn designs, stamps, or eco-friendly markers.
  • Add natural accents like twine, dried flowers, or evergreen sprigs.
3. Choose Reusable Gift Wrap Options:

How To Use It

These sturdy paperboard boxes can last for years.  They can be used for both storage and for gift giving.  The recipient will easily be able to find a good use for these elegant boxes.

Wrap the box or opt for simply putting a bow across the box given these boxes are already elegant on their own.

These boxes come in a variety of colors.

Use these instead of paper gift bags that may or not be recyclable (many are not recyclable).

Add a personalized card and bows with ribbons to personalize the bag.

These bags have a variety of designs.

Use these small burlap bags to package individual gifts within a larger bundle such as in a gift box or gift bag.  These keep individual small items a surprise.

Opt for mid-sized burlap bags in the 10 inch range which can fit most types of stocking stuffers.

Furoshiki wraps are traditional Japanese wrapping clothes that are typically made of 100% cotton and can find many other post Holiday uses.  They also require no tape or other packing supplies to gift wrap.

Various YouTube videos exist on how to wrap with Furoshiki wraps.  Watch a couple and you’ll get the hang of this easy wrapping too pretty easily.

Similar to Furoshiki wraps, American companies have come out with 100% cotton beeswaxed coated gift wraps.  After the Holiday, these wraps can be used for wrapping breads to keep them fresh.

Wrap using many of the same techniques used for Furoshiki clothes though note the cloth will be a bit stiffer given the was coating.  When done as gift wrap, use it to cover loaves of bread to keep them fresher longer.

Traditional kraft paper is an affordable alternative to purpose specific gift wrap.  You can use the same role for all sorts of other craft projects.  We love buying one thing and being able to use it for many purposes.

You’ll need to be a bit more careful when using kraft paper for wrapping.  It can team a bit more easily so just be mindful of sharp corners.

Also note, kraft paper comes in a variety of sizes so getting a 30 inch plus roll may be better for gift wrapping so that you have more surface area to work with.

Lokta paper is from Nepal and handmade.  It’s extremely vibrant paper made from plants that are more sustainable to grow and harvest than the trees often used to make traditional wrapping paper.

Lokta paper comes in large squares.  As such, you’ll need to overlap squares for larger wrapping projects.

Lokta paper is soft and almost clothlike so it’s easy to work with.

If traditional wrapping paper is your thing, make sure to choose recyclable or recycled wrapping paper.  Hallmark has an entire line of recyclable wrapping paper that use more sustainable harvesting practices.  Try to opt for these.  Wrapping paper with metallic elements and high gloss surface is often not recyclable unless it’s explicitly indicated.

Remember to opt for this option for other gifts throughout the year if you choose wrapping paper.

Probably the most familiar of the wrapping options we’ve laid out here.  Use some of the wrapping tools such as sustainable tape and bows to get the job done with traditional gift wrap.
